What Are the Rules of Blackjack?
Blackjack is a card game where each player builds toward a hand total of 21. Number cards count face value, picture cards are worth 10, and Aces count as 1 or 11. A total over 21 is a bust, an immediate loss for that hand. The hand closest to 21 without busting wins.
That is the complete objective in plain language. The detailed rules below define the conditions, obligations and exceptions that govern how each round actually plays out, and how 21 Skill on EazeGames adapts those rules and transforms the game into a skill-based competition.
Card Values in Blackjack
All 52 cards in a standard deck have an assigned point value. Suits do not change the value, with one 21 Skill-specific exception (Red Queens, see below).
| Card | Point Value | Notes |
|---|---|---|
| 2 through 9 | Face value | A 5 is worth 5, an 8 is worth 8, etc. |
| 10 | 10 points | Always exactly 10 |
| Jack (J) | 10 points | Equal to a 10 card |
| Black Queen (clubs or spades) | 10 points | Standard 10-value picture card |
| King (K) | 10 points | Equal to a 10 card |
| Ace (A) | 1 or 11 | Worth 11 unless that would push the hand or stack over 21, then it becomes 1 automatically. No player decision required. |
| Red Queen (hearts or diamonds), 21 Skill only | Wildcard | In 21 Skill on EazeGames, Red Queens function as Wildcards, they complete any stack. A 21 Skill-specific rule modification not present in traditional blackjack. |
Traditional Blackjack Rules (for reference)
These are the rules of traditional casino blackjack. They are included here for reference and to make the differences with 21 Skill explicit. 21 Skill on EazeGames does not use any of the dealer, splitting, doubling or hit/stand mechanics described below, see the 21 Skill rules section further down for what actually applies on EazeGames.
Standard setup
Traditional blackjack uses one or more 52-card decks (single-deck, double-deck, and six-deck shoes are all common). Each player receives two cards. The dealer receives two cards, one face up, one face down.
Standard player actions
Hit: take another card. Stand: stop and lock in the current total. Double down: double the stake and take exactly one more card. Split: when the first two cards are of equal value, separate them into two independent hands. Surrender: forfeit the hand for half the stake (not in every ruleset).
Standard dealer rules
In casino formats the dealer follows fixed rules. Hit on 16 or below; stand on hard 17 or above. Soft 17 is treated either as stand (S17, more player-favourable) or hit (H17). The dealer does not make free choices.
Standard busting and 5-card rule
A hand total over 21 is a bust, an immediate loss regardless of the dealer's result. Some British and home variants of blackjack include a 5-card rule (also called a 5-card Charlie or 5-card trick): if a player accumulates five cards without busting, that hand wins automatically. The 5-card rule is not part of traditional casino blackjack but is widely used in social play.
Standard winning, losing and push
You win if your total is closer to 21 than the dealer's without busting, or if the dealer busts. You lose if you bust or your final total is lower than the dealer's. A push (tie) returns the wager.
21 Skill Rules: The EazeGames Format
21 Skill is a 100% skill-based Blackjack-inspired skill game. It keeps the card values and the 21 target. Everything else is different to transform the game into a skill-based comeptition; there is no dealer, no two-card hand, and none of the standard hit/stand/double/split actions. These are the rules that apply on EazeGames.
Objective
Score as many points as possible within the time limit by completing card stacks at exactly 21 (or via the 5-card bonus). The higher score between opponents at the end of the match wins.
Stacks
The board shows a small set of stack slots. Each card drawn from the deck must be placed on one of the stacks. A stack completes, and clears from the board, opening the slot, when its cards add up to exactly 21.
The 5-card bonus
If a stack holds five cards and the running total is still under 21, the 5-card bonus completes the stack and clears the slot. The bonus rewards committing to a difficult stack rather than busting it.
Penalty points
If placing a card pushes a stack over 21, you take one penalty point. Four penalty points end the game immediately, regardless of the timer. Avoiding penalties is as important as scoring high.
Wildcards (Red Queens)
The Queen of Hearts and Queen of Diamonds are Wildcards. A Wildcard placed on a stack completes that stack regardless of the running total. Wildcards apply equally to both players in a competition (both players draw the identical deck).
Streak bonuses
Completing stacks consecutively unlocks streak bonuses. The exact streak threshold and bonus value are governed by the in-game rules and shown in the UI.
Peek and Undo
Peek (the eye icon next to the deck) reveals upcoming cards in the deck so you can plan placements. Undo reverses your most recent placement and returns the card to the top of the deck.
Level completion
Clear the entire deck within the time limit and you complete the level. The game ends when the level is completed.
No dealer, no built-in edge
21 Skill is player vs player. There is no dealer, no hole card, and no dealer hit/stand rule. Both players play independently on the identical deck.
Winning, Losing & Tie Rules in 21 Skill
A 21 Skill match ends when both players have completed their session (timer up, deck cleared, or four penalty points reached). Outcomes are decided as follows:
- Win: your final score is higher than your opponent's.
- Lose: your final score is lower
- Tie: both final scores are equal; opponents receive back their entry in full.

Blackjack Variants Explained
The core idea, build toward 21 without going over, appears in many variants of blackjack. The most common British and international variants are summarised below for reference.
- Pontoon (British). Uses 'twist' for hit and 'stick' for stand; both dealer cards are dealt face down. A 5-card hand under 21 (a 5-card trick) wins automatically.
- Spanish 21. Uses a 48-card deck with the 10s removed. Players win all ties with the dealer.
- Blackjack Switch. Two hands per player; the player can swap the top cards between the two hands before the round resolves.
- European Blackjack. Two decks; the dealer's second card is not dealt until the player has acted; no peek for naturals.
- 21 Skill (EazeGames). Inspired by blackjack rather than a direct variant. Stack-building race against time, no dealer, Wildcards, Peek/Undo, 5-card bonus, streak bonuses. 100% skill-based.
The History of Blackjack
Blackjack traces back to card games played in French and Spanish casinos as early as the 17th and 18th centuries, eventually evolving into the version known today as twenty-one. It became a fixture of American casinos in the 20th century, where the modern rule set, the dealer's fixed drawing rules, the player's hit and stand choices, the 3:2 blackjack payout, was standardised across the industry. Decades of refinement by mathematicians and professional players, most famously around basic strategy and card counting in the 1960s, turned blackjack from a simple pastime into one of the most studied card games in the world.
That long history is exactly why so many people search for blackjack rules, blackjack strategy, and blackjack variants online today, the game has had centuries to spread, change shape, and build a global following. 21 Skill on EazeGames is a more recent addition to that lineage, built for fans of the genre who want a 100% skill-based, player-vs-player take on the same 21-point target.

Frequently Asked Questions About Blackjack Rules
What are the basic rules of blackjack?
Each hand builds toward 21 without exceeding it. Number cards are face value, picture cards are 10, Aces are 1 or 11. In standard blackjack, you hit (take another card) or stand (stop). A total over 21 is a bust. The hand closest to 21 wins.
How is 21 Skill different from blackjack 21?
The card values and the 21 target are the same. The format, however, is different: 21 Skill has no dealer, no two-card hand, no hit/stand/double/split. Instead, you build multiple card stacks across the whole deck within a time limit. Wildcards (Red Queens), a 5-card bonus, Peek, Undo, and streak bonuses are 21 Skill-specific rules. In 21 Skill you and your opponent play identical decks, and you can view upcoming cards to make informed decisions, making 21 Skill a 100% skill-based game.
How many cards are dealt in 21 Skill?
21 Skill draws cards one at a time from the deck. Each drawn card must be placed on one of the visible stacks. There is no two-card 'hand' as in traditional blackjack.
What is the 5-card rule?
In British and social variants of traditional blackjack, a 5-card hand under 21 wins the round automatically. In 21 Skill, the 5-card bonus completes a stack of five cards even if the total is under 21, it does not end the match, it clears the stack.
What is a bust in blackjack?
A hand or stack total over 21. In traditional blackjack, busting loses the hand. In 21 Skill, busting a stack triggers one penalty point, four penalty points end the game.
Can you split or double down in 21 Skill?
No. Splitting and doubling down are traditional blackjack actions and do not exist in 21 Skill. The 21 Skill actions are: place card, Peek, Undo, use Wildcard, and trigger the 5-card bonus.
What are Red Queens in 21 Skill?
The Queen of Hearts and Queen of Diamonds. They function as Wildcards, placed on any stack, they complete that stack regardless of the running total. A 21 Skill-specific rule, not present in traditional blackjack.
Are there dealer rules in 21 Skill?
No. 21 Skill is player vs player. There is no dealer, no hole card, no dealer hit/stand rule.
How does the timer work?
Every 21 Skill match has a fixed time limit shown in the UI. Clear the deck before the timer ends to complete the level. The match ends when the timer runs out, the deck is fully cleared at level end, or the player reaches four penalty points.
