What is 9 Ball Pool?

It’s an arcade-style billiard game that is directly inspired by classic 8 ball pool. Where regular pool has 15 colored balls plus a white cue ball, 9 Ball Pool has nine of them. 8 Ball Pool is named after the black ball with the number 8 stamped on it which must be pocketed last. 9 Ball Pool references both the numbered of colored balls on the table and that the 9 ball is the most valuable. The design goals behind this game were to emulate the intense competition and money earning aspects of physical pool halls as well as the emphasis on lining up shots and problem-solving. 9 Ball Pool’s faster-paced gameplay makes hitting trick shots far more important than safely pocketing individual balls.

Regardless, the main design premise was to make a game that was easy to learn yet hard to master and we’re confident that 9 Ball Pool is that type of game. Now, let’s take a look at the 9 Ball Pool rules.

9 Ball Pool Rules

As we’ve mentioned both in this article and the previous one, 9 Ball Pool is a simple game to pick up and start playing. The challenge lies in being able to maximise your score with every shot. You’ll find there are no hidden variables or random factors. Just pure, unadulterated skill gaming. In this segment, we’ll be giving you the 9 Ball Pool rules in a more in-depth fashion. Once you’ve read this, you can confidently proceed to check out the game on EazeGames.

Nine balls

In 9 Ball Pool, there are nine colored balls, all numbered from 1 to 9. As is with regular pool, the table has 6 pockets, one on each corner and one at each long side. Your goal is to raise your score as high as possible before the 120-second timer runs out.

Pocketing each colored ball is worth 10 points. If you accidentally knock the cue ball into any one of the pockets, you get 10 deducted from your score. Points aside, so far the game does feel and play like regular pool. One key difference, though, lies in the order by you which have to strike the balls.

Each turn, your cue ball must hit the colored ball with the lowest number on the table. At the beginning when there are no pocketed balls, the first ball you need to strike is the 1 ball. If that one has been pocketed, then the one your cue ball should touch first before any other ball is the 2 ball. And so on it goes. After striking the lowest valued ball, you can touch any others regardless of value. Striking any ball first besides the one with the lowest number results in a foul ball which resets your cue back to your previous position.

Trick shots

There are several ways you can bump up your total score. The first is to employ ricochets. Bouncing your cue ball off one wall before pocketing will double the score you receive for that shot. Getting one additional bounce in the same shot will 3x your score. The other way to get a beefy score is to basically win the round and reset from the beginning. You can do this by pocketing the titular 9 ball. This will result in gaining 40 additional points and you’ll begin a new game with your score carried over.

A number of strategies can be employed to maximise your score. For one, you can try to go for the 9 ball as quickly as possible to rack up those bonus points. What also works is to pocket a few regular balls, preferably with bounced trick shots, before going for the 9 ball. Decision making is crucial in 9 Ball Pool. It’s where the difference between the amateur and the master lies.
