This page is a complete reference for bubble shooter rules, bubble shooter mechanics, scoring, and game variants. It covers what constitutes a legal shot, how matching and clearing work at a mechanical level, how bubble shooter scoring rules are calculated, and how the EazeGames format differs from casual variants. For a step-by-step beginner guide, see how to play bubble shooter. For performance techniques, see the bubble shooter strategy guide.

Quick definition: bubble shooter rules define what constitutes a legal shot, what triggers a match, and what ends a game. Below is how does bubble shooter work in technical detail.

The Fundamental Rules of Bubble Shooter

  • Cannon position: fixed at the bottom-centre of the playing field. Rotates to aim above the horizontal plane. Cannot fire downward or horizontally.
  • Shot path: a fired bubble travels in a straight line until it contacts a wall, the ceiling, or another bubble. It reflects off side walls at the angle of incidence.
  • Match requirement: a fired bubble must connect with at least two existing same-colour bubbles to form a matching group of three or more.
  • Clear rule: a matching group of three or more same-colour bubbles is cleared from the board.
  • Cascade rule: bubbles hanging from cleared bubbles with no remaining path back to the ceiling fall and are removed automatically.
  • Miss rule: a fired bubble that does not create a match remains on the board at the point of contact.
  • Two-miss rule: after two consecutive missed shots, the seafloor rises, the cluster effectively descends one step closer to the loss boundary.
  • Match duration on EazeGames: 2 minutes per competitive match.
  • Win condition: clear the level (all bubbles removed) or score the highest total at the end of the 2-minute match.
  • Loss condition: the bubble cluster reaches the defined loss boundary.
  • Rescue mechanic: when fewer than 5 bubbles remain on the board, the Pufferfish rescue can be activated to advance to the next level.

Core Game Mechanics Explained

The cannon and aiming system

On EazeGames, aiming is performed by moving the finger (mobile) or mouse (desktop). The trajectory of a fired bubble follows a straight-line path. When the bubble contacts a side wall, it reflects off at the same angle it arrived, angle of incidence equals angle of reflection. Wall-bounce shots are a legitimate and intentional part of the game.

The bubble queue and swap mechanic

The player has two pieces of information at all times: the bubble currently loaded in the cannon (active) and the next bubbles (queued). The player may exchange the active bubble with the queued bubble before firing. The swap is a legal action with no penalty and may be performed at any time before a shot.

Viewing the upcoming bubble sequence

Players can view all upcoming bubbles at any time during the match. This full visibility ensures that every decision is based on complete information, removing any dependence on unknown elements. This is a core skill-based feature of the game.

Bubble physics and contact rules

A fired bubble comes to rest at the first valid position in the bubble grid it contacts. Bubbles occupy a hexagonal/offset-grid layout, each bubble is adjacent to up to six others depending on its position. A bubble cannot pass through existing bubbles. If the intended path is blocked, the bubble comes to rest at the point of contact.

Special Bubbles

EazeGames Bubble Shooter includes three named special bubbles. Each scores +66 points (vs +33 for a standard bubble) and each has a defined clearing pattern. All players in a match receive the same special bubble at the same point in the sequence.

Special bubbleClearing patternRule conditions
PufferfishInflates and pops every bubble immediately adjacentTriggers on contact. Pops all bubbles in the immediate hexagonal neighbourhood of its landing position.
PiranhaSwims sideways, clearing all bubbles in its horizontal pathTravels along the row from its landing position outward, removing every bubble in its path until it exits the board.
OctopusSwims upward, clearing every bubble in its vertical pathTravels upward from its landing position, removing every bubble it passes until it reaches the top of the board.

Matching, Clearing, and Cascade Rules

A match is triggered when a fired bubble comes to rest adjacent to two or more bubbles of the same colour, bringing the connected group to three or more. The group must be contiguous, all bubbles in the matching set must be directly adjacent in an unbroken chain of the same colour.

When a matching group is cleared, any bubbles structurally dependent on the cleared group, meaning they have no remaining path of adjacency back to the ceiling, are also removed. This is the cascade (drop) rule. A single cleared group in the right position can remove a large section of the board by triggering a cascade of dependent bubbles. Clearing from the top of the board triggers the largest cascades.

Adjacency: each bubble has up to six adjacent neighbours. A fired bubble landing adjacent to only one or two same-colour bubbles does not trigger a match: it joins the board and the turn ends.

What Happens When You Miss

A miss is any shot that does not produce a match of three or more same-colour bubbles. The missed bubble adheres to the board permanently at its landing position.

  • Board density increases: each missed bubble adds to the total on the board, making future shots more constrained.
  • Access to targets may reduce: a bubble in the wrong position can block trajectories to target clusters.
  • After two consecutive missed shots, the seafloor rises, the cluster descends one step. This is a defined rule, not a scoring penalty.
  • Level failure risk rises: failing to clear a level before the cluster reaches the loss boundary results in a -10,000 point deduction.

How the Game Ends

Win condition (level): all bubbles cleared from the active playing field. The cascade rule may clear the entire board with a single well-placed shot if remaining bubbles depend on one connected group.

Loss condition (level): the bubble cluster descends to or past the loss boundary. On EazeGames, level failure results in a -10,000 point penalty.

Pufferfish rescue: when fewer than 5 bubbles remain on the board, the Pufferfish rescue can be activated to clear the remaining bubbles and advance to the next level, preventing stalemates in late-level play.

Match end: on EazeGames, both players play the same levels over a 2-minute match window. The match ends when the timer expires. Scores are compared and the player with the higher cumulative score wins. A player may clear some levels and fail others within the same match.

Bubble Shooter Scoring Rules

On EazeGames, the following bubble shooter scoring rules apply in both free practice and competitive matches. Rules are identical across both modes, the only difference is whether the outcome is part of a cash prize competition.

EventPointsKey rule
Standard bubble fired+33Applies to every shot, regardless of whether it produces a match
Special bubble fired (Pufferfish, Piranha, Octopus)+66Double the standard rate; applies even on a miss
Level completed with 3 colours+10,000Awarded when the board is cleared with 3 distinct colours present
Level completed with 4 colours+50,000Five times the 3-colour reward: the highest single decision in the game
Level failed-10,000Deducted when the cluster reaches the loss boundary before the board is cleared

Common Bubble Shooter Variants

The bubble shooter variants below cover the most common formats across the genre. EazeGames uses the Competitive 100% skill based PvP format described throughout this page.

ModeBoard typeTime limitRandom elementsScoring
Level-based (casual)Pre-set layoutNoneBubble queue is randomVaries by implementation
Endless / survivalProcedural, advancingNoneBoard and queue randomPer-shot only
TimedFixed or proceduralYesQueue may be randomPer bubble cleared
PuzzleFixed, pre-determinedNoneNone: fully fixedBinary (solved / not)
Competitive PvP (EazeGames)Identical for all players2 minutes per matchNone: fully fixed and 100% skill-basedPer shot + level bonus + penalty

The defining difference between casual bubble shooter and the EazeGames competitive format is the elimination of random elements and the timed match structure. In casual non-EazeGames variants, the bubble queue is randomly generated. In the competitive PvP format on EazeGames, every player receives the same queue and can view the full upcoming sequence at any time. This ensures that Bubble Shooter on EazeGames is 100% skill-based.

For a full comparison of bubble shooter game options and platforms, see best bubble shooter games. If you are interested in how matching rules work across different game types, the Match 3 rules page covers a comparable colour-matching format with its own distinct mechanics.

Frequently Asked Questions About Bubble Shooter Rules

What are the basic rules of bubble shooter?

The player fires bubbles from a cannon at the bottom of the screen. A match of three or more same-colour bubbles clears those bubbles from the board. Any bubbles that lose connection to the ceiling after a clear also fall. The level ends when the board is fully cleared (win) or the bubble cluster reaches the loss boundary (loss). On EazeGames, the competitive match is timed at 2 minutes.

What are the special bubbles and how do they work?

Three named special bubbles: Pufferfish (pops surrounding bubbles), Piranha (clears a horizontal path), Octopus (clears a vertical path). All score +66 points (vs +33 for standard) and trigger their pattern when fired.

What is the swap mechanic?

The swap mechanic allows the player to exchange the active bubble in the cannon with the queued bubble before firing. It can be used at any time before a shot and carries no penalty.

What is the bubble shooter scoring rules system?

On EazeGames: +33 per standard bubble fired, +66 per special bubble fired, +10,000 for completing a level with 3 colours, +50,000 for completing a level with 4 colours, -10,000 for failing a level.

What happens after two missed shots in a row?

The seafloor rises, the bubble cluster effectively descends one step closer to the loss boundary. This is a defined rule on EazeGames, not a scoring penalty.

Is a bank shot (wall bounce) legal?

Yes. Firing the bubble at a side wall so it bounces toward the target is a standard mechanic. The wall-bounce trajectory follows the law of reflection.

What is the Pufferfish rescue?

When fewer than 5 bubbles remain on the board, the Pufferfish rescue can be activated to clear the remaining bubbles and advance to the next level. It prevents stalemates in late-level play.

How is competitive bubble shooter on EazeGames different from casual play?

Both players receive the same board, the same bubble sequence, and the same special bubble order; no random elements; 2-minute timed matches; named special bubbles with defined patterns (Pufferfish, Piranha, Octopus); a defined two-miss rising-seafloor rule; and the full upcoming bubble sequence is viewable at any time, making EazeGames’ Bubble Shooter 100% skill-based.
