Learning how to play Mahjong takes about five minutes. This guide explains everything a beginner needs to know: what Mahjong is, which version this guide covers, how tiles work, and how a game plays out from start to finish. It also explains how Mahjong works on EazeGames, a 100% skill-based variant with a twist called “Tropical Tiles” that can be played in head-to-head competitions.

One important note before we start: the word 'Mahjong' refers to two very different games. This guide is clear about which one it covers and why that matters.

What you'll learn in this guide: The difference between Mahjong Solitaire and Traditional Mahjong. What the tiles are and how they work. The goal of the game, what you're trying to achieve. Exactly how a game plays out, step by step. How Tropical Tiles on EazeGames differs from traditional Mahjong Solitaire. The most common beginner mistakes and how to avoid them.

What Is Mahjong?

Mahjong is a tile-based game that originated in China during the Qing dynasty. The original game is played by four people who draw, hold, and discard tiles to build winning combinations; think of it as a tile version of Rummy. It has been played for centuries and has spread across the world in many regional forms.

Over time, a completely separate game emerged that uses the same tiles but plays nothing like the original: Mahjong Solitaire. This is a single-player puzzle where you clear tiles from a board by matching them in pairs. Today, when most people search 'Mahjong online', this is what they find.

On EazeGames, the game is Tropical Tiles, a 100% skill-based, competitive version of Mahjong Solitaire. This guide explains exactly how it works.

Mahjong Solitaire vs Traditional Mahjong

Before we explain how to play, here is the key distinction, because the two games are often confused.

This guide covers Mahjong Solitaire, specifically Tropical Tiles on EazeGames. If you were looking for traditional 4-player Mahjong rules, this is not the right guide. For everything about Tropical Tiles, keep reading.

The Goal of the Game

The goal in Tropical Tiles is simple: match tiles to clear them from the board and score as many points as possible before time runs out or the board is cleared.

In a competitive match on EazeGames, both players face the exact same board. The player who finishes with the higher score wins. It is not only about who clears the board fastest, it is about who makes better decisions with the same set of tiles.

The goal in one sentence: Match three identical tiles to remove them from the board. Score more points than your opponent by making better decisions with the same board layout.

Mahjong Tiles Explained

A traditional Mahjong set contains 144 tiles divided into suits and special categories. In Tropical Tiles on EazeGames however, these same tiles appear on the board in a stacked layout, with varying layout shape.

The main tile types you will see in traditional Mahjong Solitaire:

  • Number tiles (suits): Three suits, Circles, Bamboo, and Characters, each numbered 1 to 9. These make up the majority of the board.
  • Wind tiles: Four tiles representing the four compass directions (East, South, West, North).
  • Dragon tiles: Three tiles, Red Dragon, Green Dragon, and White Dragon.
  • Bonus tiles: Flower and Season tiles. In Tropical Tiles, these function as special tiles with additional scoring properties, selecting them at the right moment adds strategic value.

The key rule for all tiles: you can only match tiles that are identical. A 3 of Circles only matches another 3 of Circles. A Red Dragon only matches another Red Dragon. For a complete breakdown of every tile type, see the Mahjong rules, complete reference.

On EazeGames’ Tropical Tiles, the tiles you see all have a tropical vibe: fish, crabs, turtles, surfboards, guitars, you name it.

Step by Step: How a Game of Tropical Tiles Works

Here is exactly what happens during a game, from the moment the board appears to the final score.

StepWhat you doWhy it matters
1The board appearsTiles are arranged in a stacked layout. Some tiles are on top (accessible), others are buried underneath. All face-down and hidden tiles are visible before the level starts. Both players see the exact same starting board.
2Identify free tilesA tile is free, available to select, when it is not covered by another tile. Covered tiles cannot be selected yet.
3Tap a tile to select itTap any free tile to move it to the holding row at the top of the screen. The holding row holds up to nine tiles at a time.
4Find the matchSelect two more identical tiles. When three identical tiles sit in the holding row, they are automatically removed and you score points for the match.
5The board opens upRemoving tiles uncovers tiles that were previously blocked, creating new options. Plan ahead: every selection changes what becomes available next.
6Use special tiles wiselySpecial and bonus tiles appear on the board and each serve a different purpose. Special tiles grant power-ups when matched, such as removing a tile triplet for free, adding extra holding row slots, or earning an Undo. Bonus tiles activate a double-points multiplier for a set duration. Selecting them at the right moment, not just when convenient, is where skill shows.
7The game endsThe match ends when the board is cleared, time runs out, or the holding row fills with nine unmatched tiles. Scores are compared and the higher score wins.

Matching Rules Explained

Which tiles can you match?

Tiles can be cleared by matching three identical tiles. Special tiles such as toucans and crabs can add extra spaces to the matching bar, while bonus tiles such as cocktails and guitars can temporarily double your points.

What makes a tile free to select?

A tile must meet one condition to be selectable:

  • It is not covered by any other tile from above

As you clear tiles from the board, previously blocked tiles become free. Experienced players plan their selections not just for the immediate match but to open up access to tiles they will need later.

The holding row

The holding row sits at the top of the screen and holds tiles you have selected but not yet matched. It holds up to nine tiles. If the row fills with nine tiles before a set of three is matched and cleared, the game ends.

Managing the holding row is one of the most important skills in Tropical Tiles. Avoid selecting too many tiles from the same suit without completing a match, and keep the row moving.

Matching three tiles, not two

Important: Tropical Tiles uses a three-tile match system, not the two-tile pair system used in classic Mahjong Solitaire. You need three identical tiles in the holding row to clear a match, not two. This changes the strategy significantly and is the first thing new players need to understand.

What Happens When You Get Stuck

Getting stuck is common for new players, you tap a tile and realise there are no matching free tiles available, or the holding row is becoming difficult to manage.

Prevent it before it happens

  • Before selecting a tile, check whether you can see at least one other matching tile that is currently free
  • Keep the holding row as clear as possible, completed matches free up space and keep your options open
  • Avoid selecting all tiles of one type if you cannot see the third, you will fill the row with unmatchable tiles

When you are genuinely stuck

If the holding row fills with nine tiles before you complete a match, the game ends. This is not a recoverable position in Tropical Tiles, the holding row cannot be reshuffled or reset. Prevention is the only approach.

Playing Mahjong on EazeGames: Tropical Tiles

Scoring rewards efficiencyPoints per match: 100 (standard), 200 (special), 150 + score multiplier (bonus). Speed bonus up to 10 pts/match. 10 pts per remaining second at level end. The player with the higher total wins.

Free practice vs competitive play

EazeGames offers two modes, both accessible from the same page, both using the same game engine. Free practice gives you the full Tropical Tiles experience without an entry fee or prizes. Competitive mode puts you head-to-head against others for a cash prize, with competition details fully disclosed before you enter. Start with free practice. Learn how the tile matching works, how the holding row behaves, and how the board opens up as you clear tiles. Compete when you feel ready. If you enjoy tile-based skill games, the solitaire beginner guide covers another card game on EazeGames with a similar decision-making layer.

Common Beginner Mistakes

Most new players make the same errors in their first few games. Recognising them early saves a lot of frustration.

  • Selecting tiles without checking for a third. Before you tap a tile, check whether a third matching tile is visible and free. If it is not, selecting the first two just blocks the holding row.
  • Ignoring the holding row until it is full. By the time the row has six tiles, your options are already severely limited. Watch the row constantly, not just when you are about to match.
  • Treating bonus tiles as free points. Bonus and special tiles are easy to tap impulsively. Experienced players consider when to select them, not just that they are available.
  • Focusing on one area of the board. The board has multiple sections. Clearing one corner while ignoring others can create situations where necessary tiles are buried with no accessible path.

Start Practising Mahjong

Frequently Asked Questions About How To Play Mahjong

Is this guide about Mahjong Solitaire or traditional Mahjong?

This guide covers Mahjong Solitaire, specifically Tropical Tiles on EazeGames, a 100% skill-based version. Traditional Mahjong is a 4-player game where players draw and discard tiles to build sets. Mahjong Solitaire is a tile-matching puzzle. They use the same tiles but play completely differently. Tropical Tiles is the EazeGames competitive version of Mahjong Solitaire, a unique and standalone tile-matching game.

How many tiles do you need to match?

In Tropical Tiles on EazeGames, you need three identical tiles to complete a match, not two. This is different from classic Mahjong Solitaire, which uses pairs of two. When three identical tiles are in the holding row, they are automatically cleared and you score points.

What is a ‘free’ tile in Mahjong?

A tile is free, available to select, when it is not covered by any tile above it. Tiles that are fully surrounded or covered cannot be selected. As you clear tiles from the board, previously blocked tiles become free.

What is the holding row?

The holding row is the row at the top of the screen where tiles go when you select them. It holds up to nine tiles. When three identical tiles are in the holding row, they are automatically matched and removed. If the row fills with nine tiles before a match clears, the game ends. Managing the holding row, keeping it from filling, is one of the key skills in Tropical Tiles.

Can you play Mahjong on EazeGames for free?

Yes. EazeGames offers free practice mode for Tropical Tiles, no account, no download, no deposit required. Free practice uses the same game as competitive play: the same board layouts, the same rules, the same scoring system. It is the full game, not a limited demo.

How long does a game of Tropical Tiles take?

A single match is quick, typically a few minutes. The digital format removes the time spent physically handling tiles. Matches run until the board is cleared, time runs out, or the holding row fills.

How do you win in Tropical Tiles?

You win by finishing the match with a higher total score than your opponent. Both players face the same board, so neither has any advantage from the draw. Points are scored per tile match, 100 points for standard tiles, 200 for special tiles, 150 plus a score multiplier for bonus tiles. The player who makes better decisions, selecting tiles in a better order, managing the holding row more effectively, and using special tiles wisely, will score higher.
